A note from Arne

I came up to Fairbanks in 1976 with one duffel bag and no idea what forty below could do to a house. I've had fifty winters since to find out.

For 38 of them I drove a heating-oil truck. That put me in more frozen kitchens, cold basements and dark crawlspaces than anybody ought to see. A burst pipe in a crawlspace. A furnace filter so thick with dust you could have planted potatoes in it. A whole street dark for three days in January.

Most of that trouble could have been stopped for a few dollars and an afternoon, if somebody had told folks what to do. So that's what this book is. Everything I learned, written down plain, in print big enough to read without hunting for your glasses.

You don't need to live in Alaska. Cold is cold. Here's what I'd do.

Questions

Common questions

What exactly do I get?

A large-print PDF e-book of about 154 pages: 150 tricks across 15 chapters, Arne's Half-the-Bill Plan, 16 printable checklists, quick-reference charts, a glossary and an index. You download it right after you pay.

Is this a physical book?

No, it's a digital PDF, so you get it instantly and nothing gets shipped. You can print all of it or just the pages you want.

What can I read it on?

Any phone, tablet or computer. PDFs open on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac without installing anything.

Can I print it?

Yes. It's laid out on standard US Letter pages, and the checklists are made to print one per page. Print them for your own house, your kids, or the neighbor down the road.

I'm not in Alaska. Will it help me?

Yes. The tricks are for any cold-state home: the Midwest, the Northeast, the Mountain West and Alaska. If your pipes can freeze or your heating bill scares you, this book is for you.

Will it really cut my bill in half?

That depends on your house. An older, drafty home with nothing done yet has the most to gain; a tight newer house will save less. That's why the book gives you a plan of many steps instead of one magic trick, with each step's savings based on US Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR guidance. Savings depend on your home, climate and fuel.

What if I don't like it?

Email arnealaskawinter@gmail.com within 30 days and you'll get a full refund.

Is my payment safe?

Checkout is handled by Stripe, one of the biggest payment companies in the world. We never see your card number.

I lost my download link. What now?

Email arnealaskawinter@gmail.com with the email you paid with, and we'll send it again.
